baked papdis {for chaats}

Baked Papdis and yes… using Whole wheat flour, is totally fat free.Its a great option for health conscious people to enjoy chaats and indulge in some guilt free eating.

Papdis are typically crispy round shaped chips{you can say so}, which is used in most of the chaat recipes.They are deep fried and made of suji/semolina or maida/all purpose flour. The essentials of a great chaat is that it has to challenge all your taste buds , and hence we use green pudina chutney ,sweet n sour tamarind chutney and sometimes garlic chutney as well. The papdis give the chaat a crunchy texture and tje chutneys a burst of different flavors. be frank , I would have not taken the trouble of making these papdis if they were readily available. But since I did not have anything on hand, I used the opportunity to make it more healthy by using whole wheat flour and and the icing on the cake was that it was “baked”. Of course the taste of the original papdis and this is quite different but, at the end of it I was able to enjoy more than the fried version as it was fried free 🙂 . The texture was crisp and at its best healthy. So I was completely satisfied making it. Though I would also try making the fried ones some other time, but for now “I loved it ” !!

Makes 40 small papdis

1 cup Whole Wheat Flour
1/2 tsp Salt
1 tablespoon Oil
Water as needed
You can add Ajwain if you like the taste of it, though I skipped it.

  • Combine wheat flour , salt and oil.
  • Mix well and using water , knead it into a soft dough.
  • Rest it for 15-20 mins and meanwhile pre-heat your oven to 200 c.
  • Roll out a portion of the dough into a big circle.
  • Using a round cutter, cut the shapes.
  • Make holes on the papdis using a fork, this will not allow the papdis to puff up while baking/frying.
  • Arrange all the papdis on a baking tray, and bake it for about 10-15 mins until they turn crispy.
  • Remove them from the oven and cool completely.
  • Store it in a air tight container to preserve its crunchiness.
  • Use as required.
